A Strong Dollar and Locations, Locations, Locations Turn Prague into Hollywood East
People Magazine
Focus: Pretty in Prague? That's what Hollywood thinks. Eleven years after the fall of Communism, the capital of the Czech Republic has emerged as moviedom's backdrop of the moment. Among the big budget films that have already come to town or will do so soon: The Bourne Identity (starring Matt Damon); From Hell (Johnny Depp and Heather Graham); The Affair of the Necklace (Hilary Swank); Hart's War (Edward Norton); and the TV miniseries The Mists of Avalon (Angelica Huston, Julianna Margulies). "If you're doing a period piece, it's all there," says Todd Black, producer of A Knights Tale, a medieval adventure starring Heath Ledger that recently wrapped. "You have 10th-, 11th-, 12th- and 13th-century castles and buildings still intact. Practically nothing was destroyed in wartimes." And the city has a nice ring to it. "When you tell the cast they're going to Prague, they love that idea," says Mark Wolper, Mists executive producer. " It's very cosmopolitan, hip, and beautiful." Still there are drawbacks to working in a non-English-speaking country. "I couldn't get my maid not to iron stiff creases into my jeans," Black says. "Every time I showed up on the set, Heath Ledger would laugh at me."
