...and Cry-Baby
Special On-The-Set Report
Taken from 16! magazine
Would we let "the Deppster" Star In a Major Motion Picture Without A Special 16 Correspondent In The Case? What Do You Think?
Johnny Depp filmed his first starring role in a hot new movie a months back in Baltimore, Maryland. The movie, as all loyal Johnny and 16 fans know, is called Cry-baby - it's an offbeat rock n' dance teen rebel womp that's about to come out. Just for you, 16 planted a spy on the set, here's his report of a typical day behind the scenes.
Nighttime Is The Right Time (Baltimore, MD) It is 2:30 AM.
And although the sun disappeared hours ago, it is still extremely hot! On every face a look of exhaustion, both from the heat and from the hard work. Infact, the work day is just half through! Oddly, despite the early morning hour, the whistle blows. It is now "lunchtime," and everyone must force themselves to eat; not because they are hungry, but because they will need the energy to complete the rest of the work day.
This doesn't sound at all glamorous, does it? Yet, this is a typical day on the set of Johnny Depp's new movie, Cry-baby, working long, hard hours to complete the film. Johnny usually reports to work around 5:00 or 6:00 pm, and doesn't leave until the next morning!
A New Location - & Lunch
Todays' schedule features a calm, quiet scene set on "lovers lane," where "Cry-Baby" (Johnny's Character) and "Allison" (played by actress Any Locane) share a private moment. The mood on the set, however is anything but calm. As so often happens in motion pictures, a last second decision has forced the location of the filming to be changed. Originally, the scene was scheduled to be shot near Passion Pond, a beautiful and serene little lake located on the campus of Baltimore's Towson State University. However, conflicts have forced a change in location to the nearby Robert E. Lee Memorial Park, where the actors and crew fiunally begin shooting some three thours later than originally scheduled.
During the 2:30 am "lunch", a crew member informs everyone that the scene will probably not be completed until around 6:00 am! This is to be expeted, however and Johnny retreats to his private air-conditioned trailer, which is located just off the set. There, he eats his lunch - a sandwich, fresh fruit and spring water - and studies his lines for the scene. Until the scene is finished, there is no time to rest.
A New Moon
Around 3:45am, Johnny and Amy are called from their trailers back to the set, where they hope to complete the short, but important, scene. However, two hours later, another problem stops the filming once again. It is now almost 6:00 am, and the midnight moon - so crucial to the atmosphere of the "lover's lane" scene - is no longer visible. So, for the next 45 minutes, the cast must wait patiently while the crew assembles stage lights which will shine on the actors like a "moon."
At this point, after being on the set for nearly 13 hours, many actors would become frustrated and angry, and some might even leave, refusing to wait around any longer. Not Johnny. He may play the role of Cry-Baby, but he never complains! Instead, Johnny stretches out on a nearby bench and relaxes, certain that hte delay will be short (it is), and that the finished scene will look terrific (it does!).
To his many fans, Johnny Depp is a superstar, but it is obvious that he sees himself only as a hard - working actor willing to do whatever it takes for this movie to be a success. Infact, Johnny's positive attitude seems to have rubbed off on the rest of the cast and crew, and Cry-Baby is certain to be a successful film.
So, when you go to the theater to see Cry-Baby, you can look for this scene... and remember the extreme commitment and sacrifices it required just to be completed.
But commitment and sacrifice is what being a star is all about! And Johnny Depp is truly a star!
